Amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Zotung Refugee Catholic Learning Centre has witnessed remarkable positive developments. One pivotal change that stands out is the integration of online learning, spearheaded by Daniel Ngiam, a former student of Regis High School (NY). This initiative not only bridged the gap when physical classes were impossible but also paved the way for a lasting collaboration.
Regis High School alumnus, he initiated online learning sessions to ensure that the children at our learning centre remained engaged during a prolonged period when physical attendance was not an option. Overcoming the challenge of a 12-hour time difference, Daniel rallied fellow classmates from Regis High School to conduct online classes for our children. The strategic timing allowed our students to receive instructions at 10 am, while these dedicated youths taught at 10 pm NY time. This synchronized effort formed the foundation of a unique and impactful partnership
Fast forward three years, and we now boast the active participation of approximately 35 enthusiastic youths from Regis High School. The results have been nothing short of stunning. The weekly one-hour exposure to native English speakers has not only enhanced language skills but also fostered meaningful cultural connections. Today, most of our children confidently communicate in the English language, a testament to the success of this collaborative effort.
The success of the initiative has led to a formalized partnership between Regis High School and the Zotung Refugee Catholic Learning Centre. The online classes, initially a response to an immediate need, have evolved into a permanent and indispensable feature of our learning syllabus. This enduring collaboration signifies a shared commitment to educational excellence and cross-cultural understanding.
